Default Experts to Consider Withdrawal of Asthma Drugs - Advair, Serevent, Foradil

FYI:

"Experts to Consider Withdrawal of Asthma Drugs"

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/13/he...erland&emc=rss

(blogger link does not require registration)

"A panel of lung experts is being convened today to advise the government on
whether three popular asthma drugs should stay on the market or be withdrawn
because of safety concerns.

The drugs are Advair and Serevent, made by GlaxoSmithKline, and Foradil, made
by Novartis and sold in the United States by Schering Plough. Advair and
Serevent contain the same drug, salmeterol; in Serevent, salmeterol is alone,
while in Advair it is combined with another medicine. Foradil does not contain
salmeterol; its active ingredient is formoterol.

The drugs are inhaled to keep the airways open, preventing asthma attacks.
Patients are to take them every day even if they are feeling well. The drugs
are different from the inhaled medicines used to treat attacks.

Concerns have arisen about the three drugs, the Food and Drug Administration
said, because in a small number of patients they "have been associated with
severe asthma exacerbations."

Advair and Serevent already carry warnings about a study that showed a small
but significant increase in deaths among people who added the drugs to their
usual asthma treatment: 13 deaths in 13,176 patients who took the drugs, versus
3 in 13,179 who took placebos. Foradil was not part of the study and does not
carry such a warning.

Serevent was one of the drugs singled out by Dr. David Graham, a drug agency
reviewer who began speaking out in November about what he called the F.D.A.'s
inability to protect the public from unsafe drugs."

By golly, I bet that took that smile off Rae's face! Good one there Steven

What a typical comment from an average Bush supporter.

It shows once again the level of intelligence (or lack of) and class
(or lack of) a typical Bush supporter. Good show. Keep it up! Shows
your true colors.

Better look out Rea or they might send the bulldog Rover - oops meant
Rove - after you. This administration doesn't believe in free speech
except when it suits them. Look at what they did to CIA agent Wilson's
wife. (oops, gosh, I sure hope I didn't give away her cover with that
statement).

Guy,

I don't think you can call this type of behavior "typical" in all fairness.

I have friends/family who voted for this administration and they would never
say or post something like that just because someone didn't agree with their
guy's politics.

Trashy/vulgar behavior can come from either side. It's too bad it had to be
posted in this newsgroup. But anonymous people can get away with a lot.
Kinda like Al-Quida's way of fighting - cowardly.

And for what its worth Allan, people like you two, and remarks like that,
don't steal my sunshine.

http://www.drugs.com/advair.html

· Before using Advair, tell your doctor if you have
· a viral, bacterial, or fungal infection of any kind;
· ever had an allergic reaction to fluticasone (Flovent,
Flonase) or salmeterol (Serevent);
· heart disease or high blood pressure;
· epilepsy or another seizure disorder;
· diabetes;
· glaucoma;
· tuberculosis;
· an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism); or
· liver disease.
· You may not be able to use Advair inhalation or you may require a
dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have
any of the conditions listed above.

With more and more evidence coming out all the time that asthma is
caused by a fungal infection, nobody should be using this treatment,
according to the manufacturer's own package insert

How quickly you forgot the Clinton years. In fact, Clinton is still
blamed for everything that is wrong in this country. This morning
someone told me that Osama Bin Laden was still alive because of Bill
Clinton.

As far as our politicians, the pharmaceutical companies own all of them,
republicans and democrats alike. They are all gutless wonders who have
sold us out in exchange for campaign contributions. I travel and I buy
drugs all over the world, and the prices are higher in the USA than they
are anywhere else.

Actually Osama is still alive because Clinton felt that watching a
basketball game was more important than listening to the military
officers who had his location pinpointed and only needed permission to
strike.

Almost all of the confectionary manufacturers have moved to Canada (such
as Brachs) and Mexico because our government supports the artificially
high price of sugar. Unfortuantaly, thousands of American jobs are lost
when these companies close. Soft drink manufacturers started using high
fructose corn syrup to avoid the high sugar prices.

Read the Sugar Shaft.
